What’s Going On Here?

Evian, the French bottled water giant has released designs for its first reusable water bottle. Part of their wider sustainability strategy to become a ‘truly’ circular, carbon neutral company by 2020.

Striving for Carbon Neutrality

Today, all Evian water bottles are 100% recyclable and contain a minimum 25% recycled plastic. The new limited edition bottle consists of a recyclable glass body, aluminium cap & a silicon sleeve.

As part of Evian’s transition to a circular model, all of their plastic bottles will be made from 100% recycled plastic by 2025, thereby removing all virgin plastics from their bottle manufacturing.

As Evian produce a lot of plastic bottles, these changes will have a massive difference. BUT they are still part of the problem…they sell water in plastic bottles and lots of it! We smell ‘Green Washing’.

The Need to Curb Single-Use Plastics

Green washing is where companies take superficial action to address environmental concerns, often for PR purposes. Some businesses won’t truly make a difference until they truly change what they do.

Consider this: a staggering 1,000,000 bottles are sold across the globe every minute. Annual consumption is expected to reach 500,000,000,000 (half a trillion) by 2021.

Global plastics are so damaging to our natural environment because of where they end up. Up to 13m tonnes of plastic enters our oceans every year.

Research suggests that by 2050 there will be more plastic by weight than fish in our oceans.
